Common use
Elmiron is prescribed for the relief of bladder pain and discomfort caused by interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome). Pentosan polysulfate works by protecting the bladder lining and reducing irritation.

Dosage and direction
Take Elmiron orally, usually three times a day, with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider. Swallow the capsules whole and do not crush or chew them.

Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders or liver disease. It may take several weeks to months to experience the full benefits of Elmiron.

Contraindications
Do not use Elmiron if you have an allergy to Pentosan polysulfate or any of the capsule ingredients. It should be used cautiously in patients with bleeding risks.

Possible side effect
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and hair thinning. Rare but serious effects can involve bleeding or eye problems, so regular monitoring is advised.

Drug interaction
Elmiron may interact with anticoagulants and other blood-thinning medications. Always inform your doctor about all drugs and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s near the time of your next dose, skip the missed one—do not double the dose.

Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include increased bleeding risk or gastrointestinal discomfort. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage
Store Elmiron at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep capsules in their original container and out of reach of children.
